Why the Realme X2 Pro is the most impressive budget flagship of 2019
2019 has been a year of budget flagships. Increasingly, it is possible to have a high-end Android smartphone for less than Rs 40,000. While that being true, apart from phones like Xiaomi’s Redmi K20 Pro and OnePlus 7, there is a new king in town which takes the mantle of the most impressive budget flagship Android phone of 2019. It is not because it has impressive software or a while design, but rather a unique blend of killer specs, decent all-round performance, astounding battery life.
What’s warped
1. With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor and 8GB RAM, this phone is innately fast. It is the fastest chip you can get for an Android phone but when you couple a 90Hz display on top, it feels even more fluid. This basically means, outside of the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T, it is the fastest Android smartphone around.
2. The 6.6-inch screen is a very nice one. Sure it may have a 1080p resolution but it is a very high-quality OLED panel which looks great. On top of this, it is also a 90Hz panel which can be manually set back to 60Hz in case you want to save more battery life. It’s a really good screen for watching videos, playing games and reading text.
3. As one might imagine, the gaming performance of the phone is superb. Be it PUBG or Call of Duty Mobile, you’ll find solid graphics and the frame rate drops will be rare. As far as long gaming sessions go, this phone has your back both in flash and grunt and it can go on a really long time.
4. Design-wise, this is a very attractive phone especially in the white shade which exudes a sense of class with a pearl-like finish. This means it is not too flashy but rather understated and classy. This design also provides for a dual speaker system that’s quite loud and you even get a headphone jack. This phone also has a powerful vibration motor which makes typing an enjoyable experience. If you get a lot of work done on the go, then this makes a lot of sense.
5. The biggest trump card of this phone is its 4,000mAh battery — which lasts two days on a single charge. It is also the fastest charging smartphone in India with its 50W VOOC supercharger. This phone can go from 0 to 100 charge in less than 60 minutes. This is insane because it means even if you’ve forgotten to charge the phone you don’t need to worry either way.
6. This phone has 4 cameras on the back — which includes a super wide-angle, lens a massive 64-megapixel main sensor and even a macro sensor. Image quality is decent especially in low light and at the same time it also good video capabilities with impressive levels of image stabilization making sure the quality of the footage is cinematic.
What’s not
1. Color OS is one of the worst Android skins around if you think about operating systems visually. It has a very grotesque aesthetic coupled with tons of bloatware. Realme states that the new version of Color OS which will be based on the latest Android 10 will only come by March which is a long time. And based on what has been announced for Color OS 7, it is not looking like a very promising update.
2. The Image quality of the Realme X2 Pro is decidedly inferior to phones like the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro. It may have loads of cameras but it doesn’t have the best cameras that you’d be able to get on a phone of its class.
3. At the end of 2019, this phone looks cutting edge, but one will be best served by upgrading in the first quarter of 2020 when there will be tons of new phones which will have newer hardware. There will also be newer budget flagships incoming that might make you want to upgrade in just a few months.
Long story short, this is a great phone if you really don’t care too much about the latest version of Android or the way Color OS looks because other than that software-wise it is quite functional. It is a phone which provides incredible battery life and superlative performance and that too at a very reasonable price. This makes it the most impressive flagship killer of the year considering it is also about the same price as the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro. As far as value for money propositions go, it is the budget champion. In fact more so, this phone is about more work than play because its core strengths play towards ease of getting work done, be it in the realm of performance, battery life, fast charging, display quality, design and its stern vibration motor.
