Earlier in the year when OnePlus decided to launch two phones for the first time in its history — the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro, the differentiation was quite clear. Unfortunately, 6 months down the line when they’ve launched the “T” editions of the same phones, the differentiation is not as crystal clear. The OnePlus 7T is a big update from the OnePlus 7 which makes it almost indistinguishable in terms of functionality from the “Pro” model which is bound to cause confusion. This is an explainer on which phone should be bought.

If you’re just looking for the best value for money?

This an easy answer. The OnePlus 7T is the best value as it provides niceties like a 90Hz screen, a very solid triple camera system, an updated design with a smaller notch and a radial camera bump while also adding the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor. You’re almost getting everything the “Pro” model owner will bet but for a price that’s almost 15k lesser.

What’s special about the OnePlus 7T Pro?

The “Pro” model has still somethings going for it — if you’re looking for an ultra-large screen, then the OnePlus 7T Pro is the larger phone. It has a 6.65-inch fluid AMOLED screen, it also comes with a higher resolution 2K screen, while also having zero bezels and a curved panel. This means, there is a sci-fi popup camera. Even the rear camera is slightly faster than the standard OnePlus 7T as has a laser autofocus system.

I’m looking for better battery life and performance?

The performance will be similar on both phones as the top of the line OnePlus 7T caps out with a smaller and 1080p screen while the top of the line McLaren edition of the OnePlus 7 Pro has 12GB RAM. That being said, the 3,800mAh battery should provide superior battery life to the OnePlus 7T Pro as it is driving fewer pixels and also has less RAM drawing power.

What are the new additions in the OnePlus 7T?

You now get dual speakers with Dolby Atmos sound, the macro mode is quite impressive and combination of the Snapdragon 855+ and UFS 3.1 means you’re basically getting the fastest Android smartphone around. If you’re about pure speed, then this is the one to go for.

I want the McLaren edition?

The McLaren Edition is only being offered for the top of the line OnePlus 7T Pro which comes in a cool black colour with orange accents and a holographic pattern on the back. It also comes with 12GB RAM which is more than the standard OnePlus 7T Pro. There is also a neat carbon fibre and cloth case which is a special addition in the McLaren model.
