The Red Hot Chilli Peppers confirm a new album with John Frusciante
After a decade of absence from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers line-up, the band has confirmed that John Frusciante is working on new material with them.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, the band’s drummer Chad Smith confirmed that they were “psyched” to have Frusciante back into the fold and are hammering out new material for an album.
This is Frusciante’s second return from a self-imposed exile after he left the band in 2009 following the 2006 release of the Stadium Arcadium album. The album was home to popular tracks such as “Dani California” and “Snow (Hey Oh)”.
After Frusciante left, The Peppers hooked up with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer for two albums “I’m with You” and “The Getaway”. The band have since announced they are parting ways with Klinghoffer to make room for Frusciante’s return.
This isn’t the first time Frusciante has left the band either, he left once before in 1992 following the release of “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” in 1991 and was replaced by guitarist Arik Marshall, who was then replaced by Jesse Tobias before The Peppers finally settled on Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro.
Frusciante came back to the band for the six-time platinum album “Californication” in 1999, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 charts before leaving yet again in 2009.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers announced Frusciante’s return in December with “great excitement and full hearts”.
The band have since announced new festival dates and when Chad Smith was asked to clarify whether Frusciante’s return meant a new album was on the horizon, he told Rolling Stone that “I was given strict orders for this interview: ‘DON’T TALK ABOUT THE BAND but yes, John is back in the band, and everyone knows that. We’re psyched. The festivals are the only shows booked. For now, we’ll mostly be concentrating on new songs and writing a new record. We’re all real excited to make new music.”
