The King of the Franchises takes on a Solid Role

Oscar Isaac, who recently landed the role of Moon Knight, has landed yet another role from a long standing franchise to his name.

No, he’s not playing another superhero, although let’s be honest, he could probably pull off a couple of more. From Poe Dameron to Apocalypse to Moon Knight to Duke Leto, Isaac is diving into every franchise with full steam, and the acting chops to pull it off.

This time he’s gotten into the fatigues of none other than Solid Snake.

If you’re wondering who that is, you’re probably not a gamer. Solid Snake is one of the lead characters of the Metal Gear franchise.

Metal Gear first released in 1987 for the MSX Home Computer, designed by the great Hideo Kojima himself. The games take place in a semi-fictional universe with stories that involve a Special Forces agent (Solid Snake in most games) who is forced to destroy the latest incarnation of the super-weapon Metal Gear, as well as having to rescue various hostages and neutralize certain renegade units in the process.

There’s a pretty convuluted timeline, since the games don’t actually play out in succession. But they all center around the Snake characters. Yes plural. You see, Solid Snake is one of the clones of Snake, who later becomes Big boss. It’s a lot to take in, I suggest playing all the video games.

The series has sold over 50 million copies collectively. It is also arguably the greatest video game franchise ever, revolutionizing the stealth genre. With over 20 games in the series, a number of novelisations, a comic book adaptation, and even music, the Metal Gear saga has much to excite gamers and non-gamers alike.

Back to Oscar Isaac.

In 2018, Isaac while being interviewed for Triple Frontier was asked if he would even consider doing a video game movie. “Metal Gear Solid,” he responded immediately, “I’m throwing my hat in for that one.” When asked who he would play, the actor shrugged and says, “Snake, man.” Soon after the interview, artist BossLogic drew up some concept art of Isaac as Solid Snake.

It’s unclear when filming will begin, what with COVID and Oscar’s already incredibly busy schedule for Moon Knight and his role as Duke Leto Atreides in Dune.

All I can say is, this is a solid choice.
