Fatboy Slim samples Greta Thunberg’s speech in ‘Right Here, Right Now” live
Legendary English DJ and producer, Fatboy Slim, has sampled teen environmentalist, Greta Thunberg’s speech on climate crisis in September to his club favourite track ‘Right Here, Right Now’. The footage was taken in Gateshead at a Fatboy Slim concert by Scott Jackson, 40, from Middlesbrough and the mashup has become a viral phenomena.
Thunberg’s speech was the most striking and talked-about event at the recent meeting of world leaders at the United Nations in New York. The mash-up opens with Thunberg’s voice, delivering her blistering speech to world leaders about the climate crisis over the synth melody.
“People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money,” the 16-year-old is heard saying. “You are failing us, and the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you.
“We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.”
The sample of Thunberg saying “right here, right now” is used throughout the song.
The mash-up originally appeared on social media in late September, after musician David Scott from The Kiffness made and shared it to images of icebergs breaking up. Fatboy Slim, whose real name is Norman Cook, shared video of the mash-up on Facebook. But he has now integrated Thunberg’s speech into his live show, performing it at his Gateshead show on Friday night.
In the footage, it is evident that the crowd can anticipate the beginning of something incredible when the song begins and roars when it hears the voice of Thunberg delivering her powerful speech. The way she delivers “right here, right now” syncs so perfectly with the track that they sound like a match made in heaven. One could never have guessed that this wasn’t recorded specifically for the song.
If it were any other artist, the mash-up may even have been a silly attempt at coagulating music, pop culture and politics, but Fatboy Slim has always been known to be an intelligent producer who understands the nuances of his times, hence his viability as an artist continues after decades.
Is this an enviro-political anthem in the making? Possibly.
Has Greta Thunberg’s incredibly powerful and emotive speeches broken icy club-goers hearts enough for them to reconsider making lifestyle choices? We think so.
