5 reasons HMD Global’s Nokia 8.1 is now the best sub 15k smartphone for creators

While HMD Global’s smartphones have generally struggled to compete with the likes of Xiaomi and Realme, the so-called online stalwarts of the Indian smartphone market, its 9-month-old Nokia 8.1 is now dead affordable at around Rs 15,999. This makes it possibly the best smartphone for creative people on a budget. Let me explain.

1. Nokia has some style going for it. The Nokia 8.1 with its wine colour like Iron finish isn’t just a delectable phone to look at, it’s also made very well with liberal use of glass and aluminium in its frame. This is a gorgeous gadget.
2. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, this phone remains insanely fast — more powerful than the Redmi Note 7 Pro’s Snapdragon 675, the Mi A3’s Snapdragon 665 and pretty much in striking range of the Redmi K20 and Realme X — this means the phone has ample juice for heavy-duty tasks like photo editing, gaming and even video editing on the fly.
3. It is an Android One smartphone which means that it will get the update to Android 10 very soon, now that it is rolling out for Pixel phones. This comes with a multitude of user interface improvements, API enhancements and the system-wide dark mode. This makes it a better option than even the Mi A3 which despite having an OLED screen and a wide-angle camera, is inferior.
4. The cameras on the Nokia 8.1 are very very good. It has a killer dual-camera system that takes great daytime and low light shots, apart from some really impressive bokeh mode photos. This phone also boasts OZO audio which is a boon for video recording.
5. The IPS display on the Nokia 8.1 is one the nicest I’ve seen on a phone. It is HDR compliant too with all the certifications in play which makes it great for content creators and consumers.
