With games like PUBG, Fortnite and Call of Duty Mobile being the rage, the gaming capabilities of the modern smartphone become a core competency that most consumers demand. In this article, I’ll be looking at 3 smartphones that cut across price points which retain the authenticity of being a great smartphone on their own right while acing the gaming aspect.
- Apple iPhone 11: If money is no bar and you’re just looking for the best gaming experience then there is nothing better than the new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro. The secret sauce of the iPhone is its A13 Bionic processor which is basically almost 2x faster than the fastest Snapdragon processor on the latest Android smartphones. Coupled with Apple’s overall design aesthetic and its sublime competence as the best all-around smartphone, you’re looking at the best gaming smartphone. These new iPhone 11 models are also very well-designed smartphones which all offer more mainstream design so they don’t jump out as a gamer’s smartphone. This year you also get an Apple exclusive service for gamers called Apple Arcade which costs just Rs 99/month in India and will offer exclusive premium games add free to iOS and Mac users which makes this an even more compelling gaming platform.
- Asus ROG Phone 2: The new Asus ROG Phone 2 is the quintessential gamers smartphone coming replete with the iconic Asus ROG design language and a humongous high refresh rate screen, the loudest duo speakers you’ll ever hear on a phone, great cameras and of course thunderous graphical power propelled by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chip, 8/12GB RAM and a thermal design which incorporates ventilation for long hours for gaming coupled with a massive 6,000mAh battery that’s good for playing games and well using it like a normal phone for multiple days without the need to charge it. On top of this, Asus has developed an exhaustive ecosystem of accessories for the purpose of gaming which can be only had with the ROG phone 2.
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro: Traditionally, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note like smartphones have been the best sub Rs 20k smartphones in India. And again while the Redmi Note 8 Pro is that, this time around it beyond the mundane. It is powered by the Mediatek Helio GT90t which is basically the budget chipset that happens to have the second most powerful GPU that can be had on an Android smartphone outside of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 class chipset. It also comes with 8GB RAM which makes things swimming and a massive 4,500mAh battery. If you’re the manic PUBG player then Xiaomi’s game turbo software will also come with a set of enhancements that will interest you further. While doing all of this, it’s also one the first smartphones in India to come with a 64-megapixel quad-camera system which is very good. For less than Rs 20,000 you really can’t ask for more.
These three phones represent the pinnacle of gaming in a modern package. They also cut across price points which is an important consideration, however, there are phones like the OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 7 Pro which are great phones providing a subtle balance between mainstream use and gaming. Xiaomi’s Redmi K20 and K20 Pro are also great gaming smartphones if you’re looking for something more flashy with a great screen and camera system. Consumers can also look at the Poco F1 which remains one of the most powerful phones around though it is now in the last legs of its lifespan. If the new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models are beyond your reach then the iPhone XR certainly is worth your time as it will be still better than any other Android smartphone in terms of gaming while also providing you with the opportunity to use Apple Arcade.
